Image: Cotto needs to press for a rematch with MayweatherBy Allan Fox: Rather than choosing to fight other top fighters like Saul Alvarez, Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., former two-division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) needs to put all his efforts into getting a rematch with WBA junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s), because it’s the best option for both fighters right now.

Cotto needs the fight because he fought well and if he hadn’t slipped up at the end in the last four rounds, he would have won the fight. If Cotto can make some adjustments in his game, he can beat Mayweather in a rematch. Besides that, it’s still the best fight out there for Cotto in terms of money. Cotto won’t get the same kind of cash facing Martinez, Chavez Jr. or Saul Alvarez.

Those fights would bring in good money for Cotto, but not likely the same kind of money he can get against Mayweather. Also, Cotto seems to match-up well against Mayweather as we saw because of Cotto’s size and strength. If you put Cotto in with Alvarez, Martinez and Chavez Jr., Cotto won’t have the same advantages. All three of those fighters are bigger than Cotto. It would be a whole different ballgame for Cotto because he would be getting hit harder with every punch in every round, and I just don’t know that he would do well fighting strong punchers like those guys. Cotto was hurt in the 12th round by Mayweather when he went after Cotto with a sustained attack. It would probably be far worse for Cotto if he fought Martinez, Alvarez or Chavez Jr.

Mayweather doesn’t have a lot of good choices to take in terms of fights. If he’s not going to fight Manny Pacquiao, then he won’t get the big money he got from the Cotto fight taking on guys like Devon Alexander, Amir Khan, and Andre Berto. Mayweather obviously won’t fight Sergio Martinez, not after the way Mayweather struggled against Cotto. Mayweather needs to face Cotto again and show that his off performance was just a fluke.
