Image: Cotto leaves ring without giving post-fight interviewBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) immediately dashed out of the ring last night moments after the scorecards were announced giving Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) a 12 round unanimous decision victory in their duel at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in front of 20,000 fans. There was no interview given to HBO or anything from Cotto. I hope Cotto’s not being a poor sport.

It’s unclear if Cotto made a quick departure out of protest or if he needed to use the bathroom or something. But whatever the case, Cotto clearly lost the fight, so I don’t know why he would leave the ring so quickly without giving a customary post-fight interview. The judges’ scores were more than fair with Mayweather winning 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110. Those were right about what I had the fight scored. If Cotto thinks he fought well enough to win, he should look at the fight on video and see how he gassed out in the last four rounds of the fight. The fight was there to be won by Cotto, but he faded badly in the last four rounds.

Cotto was staggered in the final round from a left hand from Mayweather. By then, Cotto needed a knockout to win because he hadn’t done enough in the earlier rounds to make it close. I give him this: He fought well in the middle rounds from the 4th to the 8th, but that wasn’t enough for him to win the fight. He started too slow giving away crucial rounds right off the bat, and then ended terribly by giving away the last four rounds. You don’t win fights against Mayweather by starting slow and finishing horribly. It’s Cotto’s fault he lost and there’s not much he can do about it now except to try and learn from it. Cotto needs to start faster and find a way to fight hard in the late rounds instead of gassing out like he often does.

I for one don’t see a rematch because Cotto will lose every time, and who wants to pay to see Cotto beaten every four to five months? Who Cotto needs to fight is Antonio Margarito. I give a good chance of winning that fight if Margarito’s surgically repaired eye swells up and there’s a doctor that quickly halts the fight before it gets into the later rounds where Cotto might struggle.
