Image: Carl Froch: Is he the best British fighter of all time?By Dallan O’ Donnell: After his sensational and widely unexpected victory over former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, one would surely have to consider Carl Froch to be one of greatest fighters of the modern era, if not of all time.

Last night’s performance ranked, in my opinion, as the best night in British boxing history, trumping the likes of Ricky Hatton’s victory over Kostya Zstyu, Benn vs. Eubank and fan favourite, Frank Bruno winning the world title.

It has taken Froch a very long time in capturing the public’s imagination, and getting the credit he deserves but finally he is receiving due adulation from fans.

Froch is a true throw-back fighter. He has fought everybody and not ducking anyone at all. Losing twice, but being man enough to say that he was beaten by the better man on the night.

He now wants to avenge these defeats to Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward. He is a great fighter, a Spartan Warrior and has at almost 35 years of age a physique many young fighters would pine for.

Fans and analysts will always compare Carl to the great Joe Calzaghe who retired unbeaten at 46-0. Carl called Calzaghe out in his younger years but Joe never came to the table. Recently, on Sky show Ringside, Calzaghe was asked if Froch could beat him and he replied “no chance”.
I disagree. I think that Froch would have given Calzaghe all sorts of trouble. Froch has by far fought the better opposition on a regular basis and of course has such a good chin.

I think Froch would have beaten Calzaghe.

But in all seriousness, Froch simply has to be considered as one of, if not the greatest boxer to come out of Britain because of his wins, his attitude, his style, the way he fights all the big names and his all round application to the sport. Froch, for me anyway, is the number one fighter in British Boxing history.

What do you think?
Who is the greatest?
Would Froch beat Calzaghe?
