Alvarez, 21, faces 40-year-old Shane Mosley in yet another easy title defense of his 154 pound belt on Saturday. Alvarez is expected to blow Mosley out of the water in a one-sided fight to move forward to September to possible away Mayweather.

In contrast, Floyd has a tougher fight with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto this weekend in what could turn out to be a grueling fight for Mayweather win or lose. You got to figure that if Mayweather struggles to beat Cotto then that could mean that the Alvarez-Mayweather fight won’t happen.

Alvarez will be fighting on September 15th. It’s difficult to imagine Mayweather being available to fight on that date, as he’ll be serving an 87 day jail term starting on June 1st, and if he serves the entire sentence, it will let him out in August. That obviously won’t leave Mayweather nearly enough time to fight Alvarez on September 15th unless Mayweather is feeling really courageous. He won’t do it because the marketing for the fight will be hurt by Mayweather being in jail during a crucial period leading up tot he fight.

Alvarez has got to not only beat Mosley on Saturday but to shine in the process. Mosley has looked horrible in defeat against Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather, and also looked terrible in his 12 round draw against Sergio Mora after the Mayweather fight. If Alvarez struggles to beat Mosley, it suggests that he’s not as good as a lot of people thing he is. In that respect, it might be best to try and get the Mayweather fight as soon as possible before Alvarez is exposed by one of the top junior middleweight contenders, causing his dream fight against Mayweather to go down the drain.
