Image: Alvarez easily beats MosleyBy Jim Dower: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) kept his unbeaten record intact with an easy win over 40-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 119-109, 118-110, 119-109. Mosley lacked the power, stamina and work rate to compete with the younger 21-year-old Alvarez and ended up taking a real beating in a fight that was sad to watch. Except for a few flurries every now and then by Mosley, he just looked like a shot fighter getting battered by a young lion.

Mosley took some god awful shots in this fight and kept coming forward to his credit, but it was not a competitive fight unfortunately. Mosley didn’t have true 154 pound power and was fighting a guy with really heavy hands in the 21-year-old Alvarez. This fight was beyond game plans for Mosley, as there was really nothing he could do to be competitive. Alvarez had Mosley in every department – power, youth, stamina, defense, skills and even speed. Mosley is a skillful fighter, but Alvarez looked to have better skills in every part of his game. Mosley couldn’t match-up anywhere. He was like a fighter three divisions above his best weight, and he was in a hopeless situation the moment the fight started.

The first round Alvarez did little, as it was a feeling out round and he looked to be studying Mosley, sizing him up like a young lion sizing up his prey. Mosley won the 1st round by default. However, from then on it was all Alvarez, as he took over the fight in the 2nd round and never looked back. He pounded Mosley nonstop with left hooks, right hands, uppercuts, jabs, you name it. Alvarez was hurting Mosley with big shots. In the 10th, Alvarez hurt Mosley with a hard left to the body that had Mosley backing away in pain. Alvarez continued to land to the body for the remainder of the round, and it only because of Mosley’s excellent recuperative skills that he was able to make it out of the round.

Alvarez cut on the side of his left eye in the 2nd round from a headbutt. The cut wasn’t a factor in the fight, however, as Alvarez continued to pummel Mosley without letting up. Mosley tried wrestling, clinching, and even throwing flurries, but nothing worked. Alvarez just come forward landing hard power shots and making him Mosley look like a fighter in his 40s.
