Image: 40-year-old Winky Wright faces Peter Quillin on SaturdayBy Dan Ambrose: 40-year-old former junior middleweight champion Winky Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO’s) will be emerging from a three year layoff from boxing to face unbeaten middleweight contender Peter Quillin (26-0, 20 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Wright no doubt has been picked out to add a scalp to Quillin’s resume and to potentially make him a star in the division. Having seen Quillin fight on numerous occasions, I think his promoters have their work cut out for him whether he beats Wright or some other 40-year-olds. You can’t make a star in boxing on the cheap. If they want to make Quillin a star, they’re going to have to finally match him against a live body, someone not 40.

Wright hasn’t fought since April 2009 when he lost a 12 round decision to Paul Williams. Wright couldn’t match Williams’ work rate and he ended up getting easily beaten. Quillin doesn’t throw nearly as many punches as Williams does, so there’s a chance that Wright could pull off an upset.

Quillin is more of a one punch at a time fighter who likes to admire his work after he throws a punch, as if his opponents are going to collapse to the canvas. He does have a lot of knockouts, but those have come generally against weaker opposition. He’s not beaten anyone that I would consider a good fighter yet. He’s trained by Freddie Roach, but doesn’t look that good.

Wright will have a chance in this fight if he can stay busy with his jab and keep Quillin on the outside. He can’t let him get within punching range to land his power shots or else Quillin will end up pot shotting Wright all night in earning a decision. Quillin won’t get a stoppage but I can see him winning a decision based on his bigger shots.
