Wright looking to pull off an upset by beating Quillin on June 2nd in Oakland

By Jason Kim: Former junior middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO’s) will be making one of his rare fights on June 2nd against unbeaten Peter Quillin (26-0, 20 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California, U.S. Wright, 40, hasn’t fought in three years, and there’s no way of knowing how much he has left at this point.

Quillin, who is trained by Freddie Roach, has a glossy record but with little in the way of substance. Most of his fights have come against B level fighters in the 2nd tier and with not much talent. Quillin, #6 WBA, #15 WBO, has good power in his right hand, but not much else going for him. He can’t fight on the inside even now at this point in his seven year pro career, and he doesn’t throw combinations or jab.

He’s mostly just a right hand thrower who likes to admire his work, looking as if he expects his opponents to fall to the canvas each time he punches. This obviously a product from all the poor opposition he’s fought in the past with guys that would go down from his shots, making him look stronger than he really is.

Quillin hasn’t fought a skilled fighter as of yet, and it’s going to be interesting to see how he reacts to getting jabbed in the face repeatedly. Quillin is good at landing his pot shots against vulnerable opposition, but he coud have some issues if Wright is able to pick off his pot shots.

With three years out of the ring, Wright might not have enough left to do more than throw jabs. If that’s all he can do he still might be fine as long as he’s consistent with his jab. If he is only able to throw them occasionally, Wright will have Quillin breathing down his neck and landing his big bombs all night long.

Also on the card will be 43-year-old IBO cruiserweight champion Antonio Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) taking on unbeaten Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KO’s) in cruiserweight action. Tarver was hoping to get a title shot against IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2012, but thus far he’s been given the cold shoulder for a fight. However, Tarver is still hoping he can get a fight against him. In the meantime, Tarver will look to knock off the 29-year-old Kayode, #2 WBA, #5 WBO, #11 IBF.

Tarver hasn’t fought since last July when he stopped IBO champion Danny Green to capture his International Boxing Organization title.
