Image: Tyson Fury looking to capture European heavyweight title nextBy William Mackay: With his win over 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-3, 7 KO’s) last weekend in Belfast, unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (18-0, 13 KO’s) could soon be facing the winner of the May 5th clash between Alexander Dimitrenko and Kubrat Pulev for the European Boxing Union (EBU) heavyweight title.

Fury is expected back soon on June 30th, and obviously won’t be facing the Pulev-Dimitrenko fight next, because there won’t be enough time for the winner of that fight to prepare for a Fury bout. However, the fight looks like it could happen later on this year.

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy said this after Fury’s win over Rogan “He’s [Fury] looking at fighting on June 30th to keep him busy. He wanted the Irish belt. The European would be nice and then genuine world title honors.”

I have my doubts Fury would be put in with either Dimitrenko or Pulev, because those guys would be a serious threat to Fury right now. Both are almost the same size as him and have good skills and decent power. The Fury that beat Rogan last Saturday would struggle against either of those guys.

If Fury comes out there trying some ridiculous southpaw stance as an experiment against one of those guys, Fury will find himself taking a lot of punishment and likely knocked out. I don’t like his chances against Dimitrenko or Pulev no matter stance he uses. Fury can fight in the orthodox stance and still lose to fighters like them. That’s why I can’t see Hennessy letting Fury anywhere near those fighters. If Fury isn’t allowed to fight David Price, then he probably won’t be permitted to fight Dimitrenko or Pulev. There’s too many chances for Fury to lose to those fighters.

Fury looked sloppy and clueless in the first couple of rounds against Rogan. He fought a little better after knocking Rogan down with a weak looking left hand in the 3rd, but he still looked awful and very beatable. In the 5th, Fury knocked Rogan down with a left to the body that didn’t look like a hard punch.

Rogan was hurt and the fight was halted after he got back to his feet. Neither of the knockdown punches looked like big shots. What it looked like was that Fury had a really old 2nd fighter in front of him that had a lot of rust on him and who couldn’t handle body shots, any kind of body shots.
