Pacquiao and Roach made a big mistake in fighting Bradley

Image: Pacquiao and Roach made a big mistake in fighting BradleyBy Chris Williams: Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao for some reason decided that it was a good idea for them to face unbeaten Timothy Bradley next on June 9th instead of one of the more typical opponents – coming off a loss, drained from a catchweight or completely shot – to fight in their HBO PPV mega fight.

I think Pacquiao is going to pay a big price for having selected Bradley because he’s going to take a pounding and get worn down with Bradley’s pressure. Pressure is the one thing that has been Pacquiao’s problem area in recent fights against both Antonio Margarito and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao does well when he’s able to fight at a slower pace so he can get plenty of rest breaks but when you push the 33-year-old hard like Bradley will be doing, you’ll likely see all of the problems with that has been afflicting him recently with his leg cramps and his stamina issues resurfacing.

Bradley knows what he sees in Pacquiao – an aging fighter that has lost a step – and he’s going to be pushing him to fight at a fast pace to see what will happen. It’s kind of like having an old car with 300,000 miles on it and you suddenly take it on a long trip at high speeds. Things start breaking down after a certain amount of miles. It’s only natural.

Pacquiao’s trainer is already worried almost sick about what his Filipino star is facing with the younger, arguably more energetic Bradley. This is why Roach wants Pacquiao to start his training camp as soon as possible because he knows he’s got his work cut out for him. Bradley is the fighter that can end the gravy train once for all. A loss to Bradley will be a crushing blow to Pacquiao’s career.

Sure, he’ll get an immediate rematch due to his rematch clause in his fight contract with the American star, but you know how those things go. Once a fighter has beaten in the first fight, they usually get whipped in the 2nd as well. That is unless you get judges giving gift decisions like they did with the Brandon Rios vs. Richard Abril fight last weekend. I’d hate to see that because we’ve already seen Pacquiao get two controversial wins over Marquez in 2008 and 2011, and it would be really disappointing for it to become the norm for the Filipino fighters’ bouts as he starts to age.
