Image: Mayweather: I will silence my critics on May 5thBy Dan Ambrose: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he may elect to stick around the junior middleweight division after he faces WBA 154 pound champion Miguel Cotto next month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to win yet another world title in a different weight class. Mayweather also might move up to 160, depending on what fights he can find there.

Mayweather said to craveonline.com “The fact that I’m a champion in five different weight classes proves that weight is not a factor, and I’m willing to consider more fights at 154 or heavier if I believe that it is the next best move for me.”

Mayweather went on to say that his advisers Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe will decide which is the best option for Floyd after the Cotto fight. I don’t know that there are too many good fights at 160 other than a bout against Sergio Martinez. That’s the only exciting fight at that weight, because I don’t see Mayweather taking on Top Rank promoted WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. because it would involve doing business with Bob Arum, and that’s probably not something Mayweather will be interested in. Chavez Jr. also would be a tough opponent due to his weight. Unless Mayweather could get him to agree to a day of the fight weigh-in limit, Mayweather would be facing a guy that outweighs him by 20 pounds on the night of the fight. Mayweather would still beat Chavez Jr. but it would be a tough fight.

At 154, there’s only WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez for Mayweather to fight. The other top fighters James Kirkland, Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martirosyan, don’t have a big enough name for Mayweather to get anything out of fighting them.

Mayweather said “I am going to show once again that I am the best fighter in the world today. I will silence the critics.”
