Image: Mayweather expected to fight in NovemberBy Chris Williams: Provided that Floyd Mayweather Jr. can get past WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto on May 5th, Mayweather will be fighting near the end of the year after he gets out of jail from serving his 90 day jail term. The opponents are still unknown at this point, although Sergio Martinez’s name has already been mentioned as one possibility, as is Saul Alvarez.

I doubt Mayweather Jr. will elect to take on Martinez because it would require for Mayweather to add even more weight on his small frame and that would make it troublesome for him to try and take the weight back off for him to take on guys like Amir Khan, Andre Berto, Kell Brook and Manny Pacquiao at welterweight. Those are the targets Mayweather should be looking to get out of the way before moving up in weight.

Mayweather also needs to go after a unification bout with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. That fight is still too early at this point because Alvarez hasn’t yet made a name for himself to be at the stage where a fight between him and Mayweather would be a big deal. Mayweather should let Alvarez keep winning and they can meet up later on in 2013 or 2014.

Mayweather wants to face Manny Pacquiao in 2012, but that’s still a fight where it’ll be tough to make because of Pacquiao wanting too much money for them to do it. Maybe if Pacquiao loses to Timothy Bradley on June 9th, Pacquiao will have a more open mind to the kinds of dollar figures that Mayweather is talking about. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Bob Arum to allow his cash cow Pacquiao to be put in with Mayweather anytime soon, not with there still being a number of beatable options for Arum to put Pacquiao in with.

Mayweather needs to take the best money fight out there for his next bout, and that might be Khan. If Khan can beat Lamont Peterson in May, then we could have Mayweather-Khan later on in the year if Khan is up for it.
