Image: Mayweather: Cotto's trainer won't help himBy Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t see Miguel Cotto’s trainer Pedro Diaz being able to bail Cotto out this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when things start to go badly for him in this HBO televised pay-per-view fight. Mayweather sees Cotto fighting as he always does regardless of what new things that Diaz has taught him in training camp.

Mayweather told fighthubtv: “The trainer isn’t going to make a difference. Miguel Cotto’s boxing style is already set one way. So I think the trainer can’t really change his style, because when you’re in a big fight, a fight of this magnitude, once a guy gets hit with a good shot, he’s going to go back to doing what he mainly does.”

Agree with Mayweather. Cotto is showing some things in training camp, but he’ll revert back to what he once was after Mayweather starts putting some leather on him. Cotto has changed his boxing style somewhat since his destruction by Manny Pacquiao in 2009, but he’s not faced anyone that was a real threat to him, so he was able to tinker around with a different style of fighting without really being pushed.

It was kind of like heavyweight Tyson Fury coming out in the southpaw stance against 40-year-old Martin Rogan recently. Fury could do this because Rogan was no threat to him. Likewise, Cotto was able to alter his usual slugging face first fighting style in his last three bouts, but that was likely because he was facing weak opposition.

There was no real threat for Cotto in those fights against Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito. Cotto could run around the ring and still win. But against Mayweather, Cotto will likely revert back to his normal fighting style once he starts getting pummeled by Mayweather on Saturday. Cotto will likely start fighting back with his old slugging style and it’ll make it even easier for Mayweather to take him out with his pint point counter shots.
