Image: Groves' injured nose expected to take 10 weeks to healBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) still has hopes of facing WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz after Groves’ nose heals up in an estimated 10 weeks time, according to boxing news from thesun.co.uk.

Groves injured the cartilage in his nose while training recently, and it’s going to take quite some time for it to heal. Stieglitz would have to be pretty desperate for a fight to sit on the shelf and wait 10 entire weeks to wait on a guy who may still not be ready then. Who knows what will happen in Groves’ next training. He already was injured while training for his previous opponent Kenny Anderson last March and had to pull out of that fight as well.

Now Groves has pulled out of the Stieglitz fight with an injury. I’d bail in a heart beat if I was Stieglitz. He doesn’t have an entire lifetime to sit around and wait for all of Groves’ aches and pains to heal up so that he’s one day 100%. For a young guy, Groves reminds me of an old codger. I can only imagine the kinds of injuries that will afflict the guy when he’s in his last 20s. Forget about the 30s, I’m thinking he’ll be lucky to be fighting still in his 20s at this rate with the injuries popping left and right.

Adam Booth, Groves’ trainer, said to The Sun “We are still waiting for an official diagnosis from a specialist. George can train but he can’t take part in full contact sparring. If everything goes as expected, he will be ready to fight in 10 weeks, possibly less.”

Forget that. I’m not waiting around if I’m Stieglitz. He’d be waiting around and then something else goes on Groves’ body. I can just hear it now from Booth, ‘Ah, it should be only 9 weeks this time. Still have no clue what it is but, I’m thinking 9 weeks.’ No way am I waiting around. I’d be gone the next second. Who needs that kind of challenger?

Groves’ promoter is hoping to still put the fight together with Stieglitz later on in the year after he heals. However, with Groves now having lost his mandatory status as the WBO challenger, he’ll probably have to wait his turn. If Arthur Abraham, the new WBO mandatory, is able to beat Stieglitz, then the wait could turn out to be much longer for Groves. On a side note: I don’t give Groves much of any chance of beating the hard hitting Abraham, in particular with the fight being held in Germany which it likely would.

The only way that Groves could beat Abraham in Germany is to go right at Abraham to try and beat him at his own game of slugging. Groves doesn’t punch hard enough to beat Abraham in that kind of fight in my estimation. As such, Groves would probably end up getting blasted out and left on the canvas in a bloody heap. There’s nothing wrong with that because he might win a few fans if he goes out on his shield instead of looking to box all night long.
