Image: Eddie Chambers vs. Tomasz Adamek on June 16thBy Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek will be facing Eddie Chambers on June 16th in scheduled 10 round heavyweight bout at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Dan Rafael is reporting that Kathy Duva of Main Events says she received a signed contract from former heavyweight title challenger Chambers for the Adamek fight.

This is good news because Adamek, 35, really needs to fight at least one good heavyweight contender before being thrown back in with the Klitshkos to get torn apart again. It would be laughable if Adamek were to back his way into another title fight by facing 2nd tier opposition like he did last time to get a fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last September. Adamek looked horrible in that fight, just running around the ring and getting speared over and over by Vitali’s jabs, left hooks and right hands until getting taken out in the 10th. Adamek has fought once since then, beating 2nd tier heavyweight Nagy Aguilera by a 10 round unanimous decision last month on March 24th.

Chambers, 30, has done almost nothing since being stopped in the 12th round by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in March 2010. Chambers took 11 months off after suffering a really bad knockout in that fight and came back in February of last year to easy beat Derric Rossy by a 12 round unanimous decision in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator bout. Why Chambers hasn’t fought since then is the big question. It seems pretty self defeating to fight for an IBF title eliminator and then do nothing for the rest of the year instead of staying active and fighting some guys.

The chambers-Adamek fight is interesting because both of these guys are undersized heavyweights with decent speed, but not much power. Both are excellent defensive fighters and if this fight had taken place before Chambers loss to Wladimir in 2010, I’d be picking Chambers to come out on top. But he’s been too inactive and I can’t see him being sharp enough after all that time to beat Adamek.
