Image: Wladimir working on throwing uppercuts for Mormeck fightBy Sean McDaniel: In watching IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) during his media workout one couldn’t help noticing that he’s throwing a lot of short uppercuts along with jabs to get himself ready for his fight against Jean Marco Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) on Saturday night in Dusseldorf, Germany. Wladimir, 6’6″, may need to throw uppercuts because the 5’11” Mormeck will likely crowd him all night long and Wladimir will need a short uppercut to catch Mormeck on the way in.

It’s not going to be easy for Wladimir to land his left hook or fight hand with great frequency against Mormeck due to his bob and weave head movement. An uppercut is a must for Wladimir if he’s to make this an easy fight. However, Wladimir doesn’t look graceful throwing the uppercut and doesn’t seem to be throwing it with big power. His trainer Emanuel Steward has had success in teaching the uppercut to past fighters like Lennox Lewis, but he’s not had the same luck as Wladimir. He’s not been able to master this punch despite having excellent athletic ability.

It probably won’t matter if Wladimir isn’t able to throw uppercuts with big power because Mormeck is so overmatched in this fight in terms of size, power, skills and youth. He’s older and doesn’t have the power to make up for what he’s lacking in weight. Wladimir, 244.6, will have close to a 29 pound weight advantage over the 216 pound Mormeck tonight and it’s going to be a big problem for Mormeck to be fighting someone that much bigger than him. In Mormeck’s three fights at heavyweight the heaviest guy he’s faced was Vinny Maddalone, who weighed 232lbs. Maddalone is hardly a big puncher, so his extra size was meaningless. In Mormeck’s other two fights at heavyweight, he’s faced Fres Oquendo, 216lbs, and Timur Ibragimov, 224. These aren’t guys weren’t even close to being as big as Wladimir. Mormeck will have to deal with a huge guy in the ring tonight and I don’t see how he’s going to be able to find success.
