Image: Wladimir could face Arreola later in 2012 after Tony Thompson fightBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (57-3, 50 KO’s) has very little wriggle room as far as his next fight goes, as he’s got his IBF mandatory challenger Tony Thompson has has to fight if he wants to retain his International Boxing Federation strap.

That’s going to be another fight like Wladimir’s bout against Jean Marc Mormeck last night with Wladimir easily beating the 40-year-old Thompson like he did in 2008 when he stopped him in the 11th. But Arreola, #1 WBC, #4 IBF, #4 WBO, #9 WBA, is a fight that Wladimir really wants and it could take place in the United States in either Las Vegas, Nevada or New York at Madison Square Garden. Wladimir would likely be giving up a lot in terms of gate money if the fight takes place in the U.S as opposed to Germany, because it’s doubtful that Wladimir and Arreola would sell out the 20,000 seat Garden, whereas in Germany, a fight between Wladimir and Arreola could sell out a 50,000 seat Arena like the ESPRIT arena, in Düsseldorf.

Arreola already fought Wladimir’s brother Vitali Klitschko for his WBC heavyweight title in September 2009 and was stopped in the 10th round in a excruciatingly one-sided fight. Arreola might have a better chance against Wladimir because he doesn’t have nearly as good a chin as Vitali. But then again, Wladimir is much faster, hits harder and is a lot more mobile than Vitali and that could present huge problems for the slow-punching, slow moving Arreola. You would have to figure that this would be a big mismatch.

There was talk after last nights fight that Wladimir might be interested in facing British heavyweights Tyson Fury and David Price down the road. However, neither of them are ready for a fight against Wladimir or Vitali right at this moment and will have to continue to pick up experience before one or both of them land a shot against one of the Klitschko brothers.
