Image: Schaefer wants to match Khan against Mayweather after two more fightsBy Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s going to look to put together a fight between Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) if Khan can get past IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) in their May 19th rematch. Schaefer then wants Khan to move up to welterweight and get in one fight at that weight before taking on Mayweather Jr. in a mega fight.

Schaefer said to writer Gareth Davies at the telegraph.co.uk “We would like him [Khan] to have one fight at welterweight if he beats Peterson, and then there is the match with Mayweather. We have discussed it with the Mayweather camp, and the are interested.”

I wonder if Mayweather has been told all this about him fighting Khan? I bet he hasn’t and this fight never comes off. Mayweather already said Khan runs too much and should have been disqualified for his foul-plagued fight against Lamont Peterson last December.

Schaefer seems to be pretty confident that Khan will get past Peterson for some reason. Why Schaefer is so confident is hard to know because Khan has some real worries ahead of him in the Peterson rematch, and it could turn out bad for him because Peterson seemed to dominate Khan after he figured him out by the 4th round. The next time they fight there won’t be a lull for Peterson to try and solve Khan, because he already knows how to beat him.

Khan can improve his chances of a fight with Mayweather by keeping it clean against Peterson, not pushing, holding and above all not running. If Khan hits and runs all night long I don’t think Mayweather will agree to a fight against Khan in a million years. Khan was running backwards against Peterson, although the fight was exciting, you can say that it was exciting because of the pressure that Peterson was applying to the constantly fleeing Khan. It was hit and run by Khan, and that’s not a style that Mayweather is going to want to fight, not his age. He’s not going to be eager to have to chase Khan around the ring.

Things can go really wrong for Khan in the Peterson fight. Khan is supposed to have made some changes to his game according to his trainer Freddie Roach, but those changes might not be enough for Khan to get past Peterson without great controversy and without turning off fans if Khan chooses to run all night. And if Khan elects to foul Peterson all night long like did last time they fought, it’ll probably hurt Khan’s chances of getting the Mayweather fight.
