Image: Schaefer: Mayweather vs. Saul Alvarez is a definite possibilityBy Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that a fight between undefeated fighters WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) is possibility if both fighters get past their May 5th opponents at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Speaking with Ifilm London, Schaefer said “A fight between Saul Alvarez and Mayweather is a definite possibility we’re looking at. Saul Alvarez is coming up to us on a weekly basis saying he wants to fight Mayweather next.”

This would be really huge if Schaefer can make this fight because it’s one of the bigger fighters out if Manny Pacquiao won’t step up to the plate and take the Mayweather fight for one reason or another. Alvarez wants the fight and will likely agree to whatever purse split Mayweather wants as well as the agreeing to Olympic style random blood tests for the fight to be made.

Alvarez has an easy fight scheduled on the May 5th undercard against 40-year-old Shane Mosley. This is going to be an easy fight for Alvarez once he gets Mosley past the third round. Mosley is dangerous for three rounds and after that, he’ll likely be too tired to throw much and will just look to survive rather than going all out and getting stopped by the 21-year-old Mosley.

For his part, Mayweather Jr. has an important fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in what should be an exciting fight unless Cotto starts suffering cuts early and ends up getting stopped for that reason. I’m hoping Cotto’s face stays together because it’ll be a huge let down if Cotto has to fight most of the bout blinded with blood from cuts around his eyes. He’s got a lot of scar tissue around his eyes and it tears easily when hit with solid shots. Mayweather is going to be hitting Cotto a lot and it’s likely that Cotto will be bleeding early.
