Image: Pavlik vs. Jaco this SaturdayBy Allan Fox: Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (37-2, 32 KO’s) will be back in the ring this Saturday night for a scheduled 10 round bout against a very ring rust Aaron Jaco (15-2, 5 KO’s) at the Illusions Theater, in San Antonio, Texas.

To give you a good indication of how much of a mismatch this fight is take a look at how many fights Jaco has had in the past six years. Only one. Now that’s really dipping down low to find beatable opposition for Pavlik.

It’s a good thing this fight won’t be televised because I can only imagine how boxing fans would feel if they paid to see this fight as part of a Top Rank pay per view package. Pavlik hasn’t fought since last May when he won a questionable 10 round majority decision over Alfonso Lopez, which is why Pavlik is being matched so weakly in this fight.

After Pavlik destroys Jaco in one or two rounds this Saturday, Pavlik will be fighting next on June 2nd against another weak opponent still to be determined. Pavlik will be back in action in September after that against you guessed it – another weak option.

According to vindy.com, Pavlik will likely fight once more between his September date and the end of the year. This is all to get him ready for a possible fight against fellow Top Rank fighter WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2013. I say it’s possible because there are a lot of things that can get in the way of this fight from happening. Pavlik’s promoter Bob Arum says that he wants to match Pavlik up against Chavez Jr., but Chavez Jr’s family and his management could nix the idea of they don’t like it, and I can’t imagine why they would like it.

Chavez Jr. would be signing on for a beating if he agreed to fight Pavlik and it’s probably not going to be a really huge fight. Chavez Jr. also could lose his WBC title in 2012 if he winds up facing Sergio Martinez in September.
