Image: Mormeck: The referee ended the fight too soon; he should have stopped Wladimir from pushing me downBy William Mackay: You got to feel sorry for Jean Marc Mormeck (36-5, 22 KO’s) today after his 4th round TKO loss to IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (57-3, 50 KO’s) last night at the ESPRIT arena, in Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Mormeck, 39, did the best he could but he was nearly helpless to get his offense started due to the constant clinching from Wladimir. The referee gave Wladimir warnings for his holding but never took away points, which I feel he should have.

Mormeck told the German news site BILD “The end was a bit too early. Maybe the referee should have had to intervene because he [Wladimir] was always pushing me down again. He ended the war too soon.”

I agree, not with the fight ending too soon, but with the referee needing to stop Wladimir from grabbing Mormeck so often and leaning on him with all his weight. Wladimir was really clinching at an alarming rate for a fight that really didn’t call for it. This wasn’t Corrie Sanders or a young Lamon Brewster Wladimir was in with. He had a nearly 30 pound weight advantage over the 216 pound, 5’11” Mormeck. Why do the clinching?

All it did was almost completely shut down Mormeck’s offense because each time he tried to throw punches, Wladimir would grab him with a god awful clinch. In the 3rd round, Wladimir was so forceful in his clinch that he knocked Mormeck to the canvas and fell on top of him. The referee really needed to take off a half dozen points from Wladimir in my view. Hopefully, Wladimir would have stopped his clinching after the first penalization but I have my doubts. It might have required multiple points taken away from Wladimir before he stopped grabbing Mormeck and let him fight.

All in all, I think it was an awful performance from Wladimir, because it looked like he was afraid to get hit by a guy he had a seven inch height and 30 pound weight advantage over.
