Image: Martinez shows class in beating MacklinBy Dallan O’ Donnell: Sergio Martinez showed true class in beating challenger Matthew Macklin on Saturday night in front of a frenzied crowd at Madison Square Garden. The Argentine superstar didn’t have it all his own way however as Macklin put up a violent fight and showed true grit and determination in trying to dethrone Sergio.

Martinez recovered from a supposed “knockdown” to clinically dismantle Macklin just before the 12th round. Macklin looked well and truly shook from the massive power shots and his trainer Buddy McGirt had seen enough and called the fight off with Macklin on the stool. Credit due where credit is due however as Macklin gave Martinez all he could handle in the early rounds and for a large part of the bout the HBO Analysis had the fight scored as a draw. However being the great Champion he is, Martinez responses in devastating fashion and further cemented his position as the true middle weight champion and a top three contender in the pound for pound rankings.

Martinez is now for once not short of options. He has offered Mayweather an 80-20 split in favour of Mayweather to entice “Money” into a Mega Showdown at 154 pounds which is what Mayweather will fight at against Miguel Cotto which believe me, is not a full drawn conclusion. Andre Ward, the man who beat Carl Froch so easily has said he is ready for the Martinez challenge as he still has no opponent for his comeback fight after injury. One thing is for sure, Martinez is now the hottest ticket in boxing.
