They’re looking at putting the fight in a soccer stadium in Berne. It’s unclear how many fans will be interested in seeing Klitschko fight in Switzerland, but I imagine a lot since Germany is nearby and Wladimir is huge there.

Thompson, 40, has already soundly beaten by Wladimir four years ago in an 11th round TKO defeat in July 2008, but after beating five consecutive second tier heavyweights, Thompson is now Wladimir’s mandatory challenger and ready to beaten a second time.

According to ESPN, Thompson and Wladimir came to an agreement for the July 7th fight on Tuesday, making it unnecessary for a purse bid on the fight.

It’s unfortunate that the heavyweight division doesn’t require that contenders face top tier opposition to get title shots because this is a fight that likely could have been avoided had Thompson been put in with Robert Helenius, Denis Boytsov, David Price or Tyson Fury in the past four years instead of the 2nd tier opposition he did face. Thompson hasn’t improved and if anything, he’s even slower than he was back in 2008. This is going to be too easy for Wladimir to win.

Wladimir has got win this fight – his second against a 40-ish challenger – to get to American Chris Arreola, who Wladimir reportedly will be fighting on November 10th in Madison Square Garden in New York. Wladimir has always wanted to fight there and this would be his big chance. ESPN reports that HBO may televise the Arreola-Wladimir fight. However, they won’t likely be showing the Wladimir vs. Thompson II fight and it’s not hard to understand why. Thompson has next to no chance to win this fight due to his lack of power.
