Khan: In two or three bouts then the Mayweather fight can happen

Image: Khan: In two or three bouts then the Mayweather fight can happenBy William Mackay: Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) still thinks he’s going to be getting a fight against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s), even though Khan already failed his last test against Lamont Peterson in losing a 12 round split decision to him last December. Mayweather was completely turned off by Khan’s fighting style in that bout, in particular with his fouling – i.e., shoving, pulling down on Peterson’s head and putting him in headlocks. Mayweather thought Khan should have been disqualified for the fouling in that bout.

Khan told thesun.co.uk “After maybe another two-three bouts then the Mayweather fight can happen. Mayweather has been saying some things about me but if he truly believes I wasn’t good enough then he wouldn’t be talking about me at all.”

I don’t know if Khan is aware of this or not Mayweather has only remarked on Khan when he’s been asked about him in interviews. He hasn’t been bringing up Khan’s name as a topic of discussion on his own; it’s been something that reporters have asked Mayweather about and he’s been quite clear on it. He doesn’t like Khan’s fighting style because he feels he “Runs too much.” It’s difficult to disagree with that because if you look at Khan’s recent fights against Marcos Maidana and Peterson, Khan was moving constantly in wide circles through much of those fights. He was forced to fight by both guys at times, but he often would pull down on their heads when they came in close or shove them hard to keep them from throwing shots.

Khan is going to need to think seriously about changing his fighting style for him to get a fight against Mayweather, because the last thing that the 35-year-old Mayweather wants is to have to chase down a runner at his age. A younger Mayweather might readily jump at the chance of fighting Khan, because he was quick enough on his feet to chase Khan down and knock him out. But for a 35-year-old Mayweather, he probably doesn’t want to have to fight a guy that’s basically playing tag and then running away, shoving or pulling down on his head after he lands some shots. I realize the idea about boxing is not to get hit, but fighting someone that is moving in constant circles obviously isn’t seen as being appealing by Mayweather at this time. If Khan is smart, he’ll change his fighting style in his next three fights and become more stationary and crowd pleasing. Maybe then Mayweather might show interest, but not the way Khan is fighting now. I can’t see that happening.
