Image: Kelly Pavlik vs. Aaron Jaco possible for March 31stBy Dan Ambrose: According to Steve Kim, former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (37-2, 32 KO’s) could be facing little known 34-year-old light heavyweight Aaron Jaco (15-2, 5 KO’s) in his next fight on March 31st possibly in San Antonio, Texas. Pavlik, 29, had been mentioned as fighting on the undercard of the Brandon Rios vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa fight on April 14th against a fighter named Scott Sigmon. However, that’s not going to happen.

Jaco has lost two out of his last four fights and hasn’t exactly been the most busiest of fighters in the last six years, as he’s only once during that time. His last fight was last November against Brian Bernard (10-9). He beat him by a 1st round KO, but all those years of inactivity makes you wonder about his suitability for a fight against Pavlik. Usually, fighters take on guys that are at least fighting on a regular basis and not coming out of a six year layoff. Jaco’s losses were to Chad Van Sickle and Rodney Moore.

If Pavlik faces Jaco, you would have to figure that the fight will take place at super middleweight rather than middleweight. Pavlik’s new trainer Robert Garcia mentioned Pavlik as possibly moving back down to 160, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen with his March 31st date. You knew that Pavlik wasn’t going to face a real quality fighter because he’s just looking for a tune-up bout but it was at least hoped that he would take on an active fighter so he could get something from it rather than a guy coming off of a long lay off with only one fight under his belt.
