Image: Juanma could be suspended for one year by WBO for rant towards refereeBy Dan Ambrose: The WBO has approved a resolution against former WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28 KO’s) for his comments made against referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. for him stopping the fight last Saturday after a badly hurt Lopez had been knocked to the canvas in his 10th round TKO loss to WBO champion Orlando Salido. The referee stopped the fight because he judged Lopez to be too badly hurt to continue on.

This in turn angered Lopez, who said to Showtime interviewer Jim Gray “In the first fight, his son stopped it. Now the father stopped it. The referee stopped the fight because he has gambling problems. I told the Commission the referee was a gambler.”

Lopez could be suspended for up to a year for the comments he made, but he’s being given a chance to explain himself to the WBO and not be listed by the WBO in their rankings and or fight for a WBO title.

How much this will effect Lopez is unclear, because it’s highly doubtful that he’ll be fighting against a WBO champion in the next year anyway, so even if he does receive a one year suspension, it likely won’t have much effect on him. Lopez didn’t sound all that eager to fight the 31-year-old Salido for a third time when interviewed after the fight last Saturday. Instead of coming out and saying that he wants to fight Salido again in order to avenge his two defeats, Lopez said he would be leaving it up to his promoter to decide who he should fight next. That tells you that Lopez might not be too excited about fighting Salido again.

Lopez needs to keep his mouth wired shut after he loses his fights, because he was up in arms after he lost the first fight against Salido last year in April. It was just like last Saturday’s fight in which Lopez was getting his backside handed to him by Salido at the time the referee chose to stop the fight. Lopez wasn’t happy when he should have been thankful for the referee choosing to save him from getting possibly badly hurt.
