Image: Vazquez Jr. will need to take away Donaire's left hook to winBy Dan Ambrose: Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KO’s) is every bit as powerful as Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s), but what he doesn’t have is the speed in his shots. If he doesn’t see Donaire’s punches coming, he’s going to have problems. This Saturday night, Donaire and Vazquez Jr. will be fighting for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas.

Vazquez Jr., 27, is a heavy underdog in this fight, but he may have a chance if he time Donaire and track his shots. The hardest part of beating a speedy fighter like Donaire is being able to time him because he moves so quickly.

You’ve got to be able to land shots and then cover up before he fires back his quick left hook. That’s his main weapon. His right hand is good but it’s not the weapon that he uses to KO most of his opponents.

In his last fight, little Omar Narvaez, understood that Donaire is really little more than a one-armed fighter and he focused on taking away his left hook and did a great job of it. Donaire was like a butterfly without it’s wings. He was completely frustrated with his inability to do anything because Narvaez was able to block his left hooks every time he would attempt to throw one. Narvaez really created the blueprint in how to neutralize Donaire’s best weapon and thus beat him. Vazquez Jr. needs to take away that left hook and then look to batter him with right hands. He’s going to have to keep his right high at all times because if he lowers it or tries to use it by throwing left hooks, he’s going to get nailed. What Narvaez did was come forward and while blocking Donaire’s left hook, he’s fire back a right hand to the head that had Donaire looking really upset. It never dawned on him that he would day fight someone that was skilled enough to take away his left hook, and he didn’t know how to cope.
