Former three division world champion Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) is a possibility to face the young 21-year-old Alvarez for his fourth title defense according to Dan Rafael. The fight card hardly needs any other huge stars with Mayweather facing Cotto, as those two are #1 and #3 in pay per view sales.

However, by adding Alvarez-Mosley to the card it will help sell even more PPVs while at the same increasing the visibility for Alvarez so that he can become more of a name for when and if Mayweather wants to face him in the future.

Mayweather had the choice of fighting him this time out but he opted for the better known Cotto for the fight. However, having the Mexican Alvarez on the card will help attract Mexican fans celebrating the Cinco de Mayo Mexican holiday on May 5th.

A lot of those same fans will likely be interested in purchasing the Mayweather-Cotto fight on PPV. It’s a smart move no doubt to have Alvarez fight on the card. However, Golden Boy needs a well-known opponent for Alvarez to fight, because it won’t mean as much if an opponent is picked out that casual boxing fans won’t recognize.

That’s where Mosley comes in. He’s widely known by casual boxing fans in the United States and Canada, so it won’t be a huge letdown if Alvarez is facing an obscure opponent that no one has ever heard of before.

Alvarez will be making his fourth title defense of his World Boxing Council title. Thus far, Alvarez has beaten Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gomez and Kermit Cintron and looked very impressive in each fight.
Mosley hasn’t fought since last May when he was beaten by a 12 round unanimous decision against Manny Pacquiao. Mosley’s last win was three years ago in January 2009.
