Quigg stops Arthur, looks terrible; Munroe destroys Saez

By William Mackay: On Saturday night, British super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (24-0, 17 KO’s) had to shockingly get up off the deck after getting knocked down by 32-year-old challenger Jamie Arthur (18-6, 4 KO’s) in the 4th round to come back later and stop him with a left hook to the body that turned Arthur round completely in their fight at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, Lancashire, UK.

Quigg got up after the knockdown and dominated the remainder of the fight with inside pressure and a lot of hooks and uppercuts to the head. Arthur tried to fight back but he lacked the power and found himself getting roughed up on the ropes by the energized and likely embarrassed Quigg.

Quigg could fight Rendall Munroe or Carl Frampton next. It depends on whether Quigg’s management feel he’s ready or not for that of challenge. I mean, I think Quigg looked terribly flawed – no head movement, very predictable, not skilled and pretty much just a limited domestic level fighter. Granted, Munroe and Frampton are both domestic level too, but they seem to have more skills than Quigg in almost every area I can think of. Quigg doesn’t move his head, is completely predicable, walks into shots and is too much of hot-heated slugger but without the big power that goes with it. If I was Quigg’s management, I’d keep him far, far away from Munroe and especially Frampton. That lad would make Quigg look like a little boy.

Munroe destroys Saez

Former EBU super bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe (24-2, 10 KO’s) completely obliterated an out of his class journeyman fighter Jose Saez (21-13-6, 11 KO’s) by a 1st round TKO. Munroe, dropped Saez, 36, twice in the round before the fight was halted while. Saez was sent down quickly from a left hand from Munroe and then moments later, he was knocked down again from a flurry of shots. The fight was soon halted with Munroe coming out the easy winner.

Munroe could end up facing Scott Quigg next, although I kind of doubt it as bad as Quigg looked tonight. It think Quigg needs a lot more work before he’s put in with the likes of Munroe unless take a big risk and hope for the best with him. Munroe was badly beaten by WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Noshioka in 2010.

It really wouldn’t worth it for Munroe to fight any of the other champions because he would simply be easily beaten. He’s missing in too many areas to be challenging for a title and would be better off fighting Quigg of Carl Frampton, the super bantamweight Commonwealth champ.
