Mayweather Sr. thinks it’s wise for Pacquiao to retire

By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Sr. doesn’t see any problem with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao choosing to retire – if he does – after his June 9th fight against WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley.

Mayweather Sr. thinks it might be the best thing for Pacquiao to do this rather than sticking around and getting beat by his son Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather Sr. told examiner.com writer Chris Robinson “It ain’t have nothing to do with his heart…Don’t blame Pacquiao if he doesn’t take it [the fight against Floyd Jr.]…If he doesn’t really want the cover pulled off of him, leave that fight alone.”

I agree with Floyd Sr. I think the best thing for Pacquiao to do is hang up the gloves without fighting Mayweather Jr. because if he fights him, he’s going to get badly schooled by Mayweather. I have a feeling that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum suspects the same thing, because he sure didn’t seem excited about the prospects of putting Pacquiao in with Mayweather after he learned that Mayweather Jr. wasn’t going to be starting his 90 day jail terms until June 1st.

It almost seemed like Arum wasn’t pleased by the news, because he didn’t get excited and continued to talk about putting Pacquiao in with one of his four candidates that he had picked out for the Filipino star.

Pacquiao recently hinted that he may be soon retiring in order to focus his energy in being a bible ambassador, and he said hurting people didn’t go with that. He hasn’t said anything since then but a lot of people think Pacquiao has lost his interest in boxing and is just going through the motions on autopilot. He probably should hang it up if he’s not committed to the sport. I don’t know he could retire and leave the $40 million on the table that Mayweather offered him. That just doesn’t make sense at all to me. What a waste. Pacquiao’s been fighting guys like Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and now Bradley for a lot less than he’d get to fight Mayweather. He might as well fight him and then start his bible job.

the fact is, mayweather is scared of losing manny,.he chose to retire of being undefeated, than to retire soon having one defeat…thats the fact why he coward couldnt fight manny by any reasons,.

  • Aesop says:

Didn’t Pacquiao win the Jr. Middleweight Championship of the world? If I am not mistaken isn’t that 154 pounds. Then why demand that Cotto come down to 147 pounds to fight, if Pacquiao himself is the Champion?

I know Pacquiao is all that you have Pactards, but if you fail to recognize the falsehood here, you will believe anything.

When FMJ beats Cotto at 154, that is a True Jr.Middleweight Championship Fight, and FMJ is the true Jr. Middleweight Champion.

I have an idea, Manny Pacquiao should fight FMJ for his 154 pound belt? Didn’t Pacquiao take a belt from Margarito?

Their WW Belts can stay intact!

The real reason why mayweather buy his contract to bob arum is mayweather scared that bob arum will match him in house that are very dangerouse for him to fight.

  • SCOTTISH FAN says:

why does manny will retire next year?, simply because he has no more opponents left to face him in the ring, notice that no more boxer can challenge him in the past exept marquez but marquez failed to defeat him..

  • SCOTTISH FAN says:

i can imagine now if manny retires in the sports of boxing, the sport will be so boring again..

  • Keep it 100 says:

Aesop is all over may’s nuts.

  • Aesop says:

    I would love to see:

    Pacquiao vs. Ortiz
    Pacquiao vs. Berto
    Pacquiao vs. Alvarez
    Pacquiao vs. Cotto at 154

ANY OF THEM….ABSOLUTLEY ANY OF THEM!

  • Aesop says:

Floyd Mayweather Jr. would beat anybody between 147 and 157 soundly. There is not one opponent in that range that would be even close in odds.

I would bet Manny Pacquiao vs. Ortis would be 3/1 and Pacquiao vs. Berto would also be 3/1.

    IMHO both would beat Pacquiao.

  • Adrien says:

and now Mayweather is fighting an older more drained fighter.

just quit with the talking points.

  • boxing lesson * says:

Pacgirl is a fraud that fights old drained fighters

  • Adrien says:

PS I agree Mayweather is his biggest threat by a lot…but I dont think the other list of people are threats. I think for example that Ortiz (and Berto) are tremendously overrated.

Also when Manny leaves he has another life in politics. What does Mayweather have post-retirement?

  • Adrien says:

Why would Pacquiao lose to any of those opponents (Ortiz et al.)? The only one around that would almost surely beat him is probably Mayweather.

In response to fighting former champs? Did Mayweather recently exploit Moseley? Is he exploiting Cotto?

Do you think his win over Ortiz was, while technically legal, fair? If Pacquiao did the same thing to Ortiz would that be ok in your eyes.

All I am saying is that these fans are too partial to one guy or the other.

  • Aesop says:

@Adrien, they were simply big names that needed a payheck. Arum knew this and exploited them to the 9th degree.

  • Aesop says:

Yet still has his biggest threat in FMJ, that Bob Arum knows that Manny Pacquiao stands no chance of winning. He faces the choice of getting taken out by the young lions, or let the “KING LION” take him out while getting the biggest payday of his career, and his life.

Manny Pacquiao will be forced to take the beating from FMJ in November 2012, or lose to Ortiz, Berto, Alvarez, Martinez, for much less, or simply retire…

  • Adrien says:

Why do they agree to fight at those weights then? By the way none of them have complained about the specific weights. Just partisans on this site and others.

  • Aesop says:

Arum never sought to fight a “Former Champion” that was at 100%. Delahoya at 147 even though he had never been at 147 in 8 years. Cotto at 145 for the WW championship that was 147. Margarito at 150, for the Jr. Middleweight Champoionship at 154.

  • Adrien says:

Also can I just say one last thing:
boxing takes courage…certainly none of us are climbing into a ring with the risk of being concussed or worse. So lets cut both guys some slack…even though this is what they chose to do. I don’t blame them for being selective…and to be fair both Mayweather AND Pacquiao picked pretty dangerous opponents.

  • Adrien says:

Arum may be a crook but he is hardly enslaving Pacquiao…Mayweather was also under Arum at one time and left.

All (most) fighters lose on their way out. That is the way the sport goes. It might even happen to Mayweather one day. It certainly has happened to great fighters from Robinson, Ali, Leonard etc. It might happen to Pacquiao…but of course he will be going on to the presidency or some other form of high office in the Philippines. What will Mayweather be doing after boxing? I do think Mayweather will fight at a very high level for a long time because of his defensive skills (This is why Hopkins is fighting well into his 40′s).

Anyways the Pacfans and Maylovers can’t have it both ways. Pacquiao fights a guy he’s washed up and drained…then Mayweather fights him at a SLIGHTLY higher weight and he is the most courageous boxer ever…and then vice versa…Mayweather crushes a supposedly prime Moseley, Pacquiao fights him later and he’s washed up.

  • Aesop says:

I will put it to all of you from a very practical, pragmatic, and philiosphical perspective.

Bob Arum has managed this young man’s career in the worse way possible that we can ever imagine. This was a case of Human Rape and Piracy in its most disgraceful form.

Say what you want about Manny Pacquiao, it is Bob Arum that is the cause of such visceral hate and anomosity.

We all know that carefully pitting Pacquiao with the slow, then going after the biggest names in boxing, and requiring them to drain and dehydrate themselves in order to collect a paycheck, is unimagineable.

Manipulating the past and weakening old fighters, while hyping up a young man’s career, and taking 28% of his earnings and endorsements is robbery my friends, and it is duping all of us boxing fans.

A man from meager beginnings, born from nothing, was forced to call Arum and Roach his masters, and fights for a living could have done so much more.

Now, because of Arum’s manipulation, Pacquiao is forced into a corner, and forced to ponder retirement or leave boxing in disgrace after getting pummelled by Floyd Mayweather Jr. Or, fight young lions that could make names for themselves by taking out a big name themselves in Manny Pacquiao.

The future is dim for Manny Pacquiao to continue fighting.

  • fern says:

When i read maytweeter fans coment i could see this two fighter sqaure inside the ring and manny win maytweeter fnas will riot bs they dont want to accept the losse of maytweeter.

  • fern says:

why maytweeter dont fight manny with the same money they are both p/p manny is #1 and maytweeter is #2 unless he dont really want to fight the #1, well if manny retire after bradley i think he is not greedy to leave the 50 mil.and this will stack in maytweeter legacy that maytweeter is avoiding fighting manny.

  • Adrien says:

You guys do not know anything about boxing. Neither fighter is a fraud. They might fight one day and it is likely Mayweather will win. Is there any shame in that? Most would say Mayweather is the best there is right now. I would also say he is the second best defensive fighter I have ever seen (after Pernell Whitaker).

Also give the Marquez fight a rest! I think it was a draw or close either way. But to say it was a beat down? Give me a break. Even Floyd has had a split decision with De la Hoya.

Finally, there are more than 2 boxers out there…or is that all you Pactards/Maylovers know

  • Floyd's twin effect says:

Pacman will beat Floyd badly either in the ring or the court of law. Manny beat him already in all walks of life.

  • Anonymous says:

Yeah he should retire because Mayweather would give him twice the beat down that Marquez gave him and Arum know’s it. That’s why Arum didn’t seem interested at all when he found out that Mayweather was not going to jail. For a fight that Arum claimed would be the biggest in history, he stalled for well over 30 days talking about a rematch with Marquez. Then he follow-up with that excuse with another by saying that he May 5th was to early. Only diehard fans of Pacquiao refuse to accept the truth that it’s Arum and Pacquiao who really don’t want this fight. For years they have run this con game on the boxing public by stagging all these catch-weight championships against Top Rank retreads and know that by fighting Marquez the covers began to come of and Mayweather will pull the covers off completetly to expose Pacquiao for the fraud that he is. He ran from Mayweather and Cotto to fight another Top Rank fighter, this time a lightweight. Yeah retirement is best because Pacquiao has run out of options.

Stop hating on black fighter’s YEAH I SAID IT when manny leaves Floyd will still be undefeated and that’s what’s it’s about everybody wants to see him lose, and will pay big money to see it’ this has nothing to do with Paciroid is about Floyd

  • Keep it 100 says:

Major upset to boxing once pac retires. Alot of casual fans will be lost and mayweather will dim as a star. If may loses n pac retires, no mo huge paydays for lil floyd. Pacquiao elevated the weterweight division, hate him or love him he’s done alot for the sport.

  • Aesop says:

If you think about it, what doe the path ahead look like for Pacquiao? It certainly isn’t a good one for him..

There are no big names left to drain down that will even do it…

There are no other big names in the smaller divisions except JMM, and I don’t think they are in a hurry to go back there.

The only people left are Berto, Ortiz, Mayweather, Cotto at 154, Martinez, Alvarez, and the unknown Jones.

Either take the azz whoopin from Floyd, or retire…HE HAS NO CHOICE!

  • Adrien says:

I hate how partisan you are Chris. I must say though, that regardless of how all of this ends, Pacquiao will go back to the Philippines where he is revered…oh and he is a congressman…and will possibly be a presidential candidate. Mayweather will be going to a jail cell for domestic abuse. When he gets out he will be facing all kinds of other legal entanglements. Also he does not have anywhere approaching the global fame of Pacquiao.

Having said that, i personally think Mayweather is the best p4p out there by quite a bit and would probably decision Pacquiao in a fight.

When will you clowns ever realize Manny doesn’t care about his legacy. Not once did he ever claim that he is one of the best boxers of all time nor did you ever hear him say he’s the best athlete to come out of Asia. He just want to prove himself and test his abilities inside the ring and he is grateful for every opportunity that opened up for him. Unlike Mayweather who’s claiming he’s the best of all time and clearly is a losing argument.

Remember these are facts and I am sure Pac fan have their own, but again he had a close maybe even a lost to last Marquez fight according to boxing rules not the fans boxing rules. How then is he suppose to negotiate 50/50 split with an undefeated fighter.

Pac and Cotto 2nd fight did not happen because of not catch weight so he fights Bradley for less than what Floyd offered, is that the truth or not ask your self that? Pac didnt not win impressivly against Marquez so how can Arum or whom ever call the shoots on the money, think about it man. I am not saying Pac cant win, yes he can but he does not put enought efford to make the fight happen.

I also think if this fight happen it will go the distance and anything can happen there. The reason for the fight not happening is due to money issues. Both have egoes and that’s the real reason I don’t think neither is afraid and if one of them has anything to lose it’s mayweather cuz his perfect record is all he has since that’s all he talks about when he compares himself to other boxers.

  • mmedrano says:

I am a fan of boxing…those who say May would K.O. Pac are delusional. I believe the fight could go either way…Pac being the busier of the two fighter would land some good shots and could win that way…I would give Pac the better chance for the K.O., now i am not saying that May has no chance of winning, as I see his chances as good as Pac’s, May’s defense and pot shots could disrupt Pac’s rhythm and this could allow him to pull off the “W”. I do not believe May would even get close to stopping Pac by K.O. it isn’t his style nor his strongest point…the win in my opinion could go either way…depends on who is more determined.

  • Ross says:

    @ Tony

I don’t know for sure that Mayweather would knock Pacquiao out. But, I think it is very possible. I think by the middle of the fight, Mayweather will be landing at will. This may be too much for Pacquiao. He has a good chin but, I think Mayweather will put it to the test. I think the fight would probably go to decision. In that case, Mob Bob may buy Mayweather’s first loss.

Its funny how lot of mayweather fans think pacman will be so easy to beat and that mayweather will ko pacman. Mayweather doesnt have that kind of Power unless pacman starts to hug and kiss mayweather…unlike manny does have that kind of Power. If mayweather and his father aré so confident about beating manny than why didnt they fight him when pacman wanted to? Just because marquez schooled pacman doesnt mean mayweather will do the same. Also mayweather faught Márquez at a weight Márquez should of not took and mayweather still got there over weight which lost my respect for him either way. He had to pay Márquez about 100,000 for every lb over 150lb limit. It would be funny what mayweather fans say if this fight does happen and pacman ko’s him out

Pacquiao has already made plenty of money in this game and he would be wise to retire now rather than take risks that will further diminish his accomplishment. As it stands, his career will always be debated for the catch weights and fighting only when all conditions favored him. This is not all his fault, his career was carefully staged by his promoter, and we must admit that Arum has done a great job at that.
One great thing that was accomplish by Manny and his promoter is to bring interest back to the sport because of the charisma and great story behind Manny.
