Mayweather plans on ending Cotto’s short reign as WBA strap holder

By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 25 KO’s) came out with both barrels blazing at today’s press conference in Puerto Rico with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) to promote their May 5th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather basically said he’s going to beat Cotto, take his World Boxing Association strap that Cotto won against a fellow Top Rank fighter Yuri Foreman back in June 2010.

Here is some of the things Mayweather touched on during the press conference:

“It will be a challenge for me to fight Miguel at this weight, but this will be the test that will motivate me to train harder. I have no doubt that my collection of belts will increase again and Cotto’s reign will end on May 5th.”

Big deal! Cotto beat a fighter with a bad leg to get the WBA title in the first place, and then Cotto defended it twice against 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito. If you follow boxing, you’ll note that Mayorga hasn’t looked good in many, many years and the fact that he was selected over arguably more deserving fighters like Vanes Martirosyan, James Kirkland, Austin Trout, Sergiy Dzinziruk and Erislandy Lara is kind of sad. As for Margarito, he was coming off not one but three separate surgeries when he fought Cotto last December. So as you can see, Cotto hasn’t exactly been tearing the division apart in winning the WBA strap and defending it twice against opposition selected by his promoter.

Mayweather continues “To be the best in the sport, you must face the best. Miguel Cotto is one of the best fighters in the sport of boxing today. I would only be fight for them to support their fighter, but when it comes down to it, when it comes down to the come down, one man has to rise to the occasion and that will be me. It’s just another day, so they can scream and root for him because that’s the right thing to do, but when God is on your side, you will always rise.”

I don’t see this as much of a problem for Mayweather to come out on top in this one. Cotto has slipped a lot due to his ring wars and I see him as the 7th or 8th best fighter in the junior middleweight division right now. Mayweather might not be a junior middleweight but he’s more than good enough to make Cotto look bad and take away his WBA strap on May 5th by knocking him out.
