Mayweather: I’m not a cheater like Pacquiao and Margarito

By Chris Williams: Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. took the opportunity during Monday’s press conference with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in Puerto Rico to take a little stab at his nemesis, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in calling him a cheater. It looked like Mayweather wanted to name drop Pacquiao to help get a little more headlines for this fight, as if it really needs it.

Mayweather said “Floyd Mayweather is not a cheater like Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao.”

Mayweather is obviously talking about his suspicions that Pacquiao may have used performance enhancing drugs to find success. As for Margarito, Mayweather is clearly talking about the loaded hand wraps that were discovered before Margarito’s fight with Shane Mosley in 2009. The hand wraps were found to have a plaster like material on the inserts of the hand wraps.

I wonder if Mayweather will continue to tap Pacquiao’s name in future press conferences with Cotto to get more attention. It obviously works because this quote has probably gotten the most attention than any other thing Mayweather said during the press conference with Cotto.

Montiel to face Angkota on Saturday

Former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (46-4-2, 36 KO’s) will be fighting on Saturday night against Angky Angkota (25-6, 14 KO’s) for the vacant WBC International Silver super bantamweight title in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. Montiel, 32, could really use some change of luck right now because he’s lost two out of his last four fights and really doesn’t belong at super bantamweight, the division he’s currently fighting in. Montiel lost his last fight to Victor Terrazas last November, and although the fight was close, it was still another loss for him. He wants to pick up a title at this weight, but other than the title that he;s going after on Saturday night, the WBC International Silver title, I can’t see him beating any of the World champions at super bantamweight. He’s too small and his chin too fragile.
