Image: Froch saying he didn't prolong a fight for bets; Pacquiao says he asked for a 50-50 deal with Mayweather, but got no answerBy William Mackay: Recently Carl Froch mentioned to the BBC that he had carried an opponent in a 2005 bout, prolonging the fight until the 5th round so that family members could win bets that they had put on the fight against Ruben Groenewald. However, in an interview with Sky Sports News HD, Froch said it was a “throwaway statement” he made.

Froch said “Every time I fight, when good fighters fight, they often make predictions. It’s all part of the media hype beforehand. On that particular occasion I made a prediction that I would win the fight in a certain round. But the comments made about prolonging the fight were a throwaway comment that, in hindsight, I shouldn’t have said. I shouldn’t have said that because I have never done that. It’s too dangerous to try and attempt to do that in a fight.”

That’s good to know because it seemed kind of off putting to think that Froch had prolonged a fight just so that family members could win bets. Given all the things that went on last weekend with the David Haye and Dereck Chisora brawling during the Chisora – Vitali Klitschko press conference in Munich, Germany, having Froch come out with a bombshell about carrying fighters to a specific round so that family members can win bets is a rather distasteful thing. It’s good to know that Froch never did do this.

Pacquiao says he got no response from Mayweather Jr. when he told him he wanted a 50-50 purse split

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao told Yahoo Sports that he asked for a 50-50 deal from Floyd Mayweather Jr. after being offered a mere $40 million out of a potential $160 million pot. However, when he made the counter offer to Mayweather, he heard nothing back from him.

Pacquiao said to Yahoo Sports “I told him I would agree to to all of the other things he was demanding, everything. Even the blood testing he wanted. I would do it. But it had to be 50-50.”

Pacquiao heard nothing from that point and was forced to look for another opponent for his June 9th date. His promoter Bob Arum picked out one of his Top Rank fighters in his stable, unbeaten WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley to face Pacquiao. It’s a big jump up for Bradley because he’s not only moving up in weight but he’s making a considerable leap up in talent. Bradley, who doesn’t have a lot of power, has beaten fighters like Lamont Peterson, Devon Alexander and Junior Witter. Those are all quality fighters but not big punchers like Pacquiao. It’s going to be tough for him. However, if he can take Pacquiao’s power without getting mowed down early, he could make it a very tough fight for the Filipino just as Juan Manuel Marquez did last November.
