Donaire and Vazquez Jr. hate each other: Will this change the outcome?

Image: Donaire and Vazquez Jr. hate each other: Will this change the outcome?(Photo credit: Adrian Hernandez) By Dan Ambrose: It’s interesting to note how much Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) and former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KO’s) seem to genuinely dislike each other with great intensity as they head into their fight on Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Both of them recently grabbed their hats and tossed them when they were standing face to face. However, I don’t see how any of this will have any bearing on the outcome of tomorrow’s fight. Donaire is simply a lot better than Vazquez Jr. and he’s facing a guy that was recently knocked out to boot. Unless Vazquez Jr. can shut down Donaire’s main weapon – his left hook – then he’s going to lose. Donaire is a left hook happy fighter and if that weapon can be taken away from him, he’s very beatable. But is Vazquez Jr. the guy that can do this? I don’t think so. He’s still a pretty green fighter that needs a lot more experience before he can compete with the likes of Donaire.

I must say that Donaire didn’t look so great at today’s weigh-in. He had bags under both eyes, looked sleepy, not particularly toned and kind of haggard. Donaire looked like someone that’s not been training or sleeping well. Instead of a six pack for his abs, I saw only a one-pack and he has a little bit of flab on his lower midsection. Vazquez Jr. looked a lot better, a lot healthier and ready to fight.

Donaire and Vazquez Jr. will likely weigh over 140lbs tomorrow night after they rehydrate. Donaire weighed 121.5 today, while Vazquez Jr. came in at 122. Both of them will look like light welterweights in the ring by fight time, and I suspect Donaire will be the bigger guy like usual and could weigh as much as 145. He’s just a huge guy for the super bantamweight division and he’s going to win.
