Image: Chisora's courage will get him knocked out faster against VitaliBy Allen Fox: Former British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) wants boxing fans to know that he’s not afraid of WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) as they head into their February 18th fight in Munich, Germany.

Chisora says “I am not scared. That’s why I am going to be successful.” Lack of fear translates to a victory in the eyes of Chisora. Historically that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Fear is actually a good thing because it can save you from using the wrong tactic and getting knocked out.

Chisora, however, can be excused for his bold statements because he’s riding high right now off of his performance against another huge giant heavyweight Robert Helenius last December. Chisora showed no fear in that fight and it helped him fight well enough to where he should have won, but ended up losing a controversial 12 round decision.

Chisora looked like he had no respect for Helenius’ power and he took the occasional big shot that he would throw and kept firing shots back. However, unknown to everyone at the time, Helenius had gone into the fight with a badly injured right shoulder and he further complicated things for himself by injuring his right hand in the 2nd round. With both injuries crippling his right hand power, Helenius could do little more than jab and throw slapping right hands from time to time. How the boldly confident would have done against a healthy Helenius is hard to tell, but I think things would have gone badly for Chisora.

Now Chisora is going into the February 18th fight with Vitali thinking he can do the same thing against him that he did with Helenius. It’s no wonder then that Chisora feels he can walk on water and beat the 40-year-old Vitali in this fight. I think Chisora is going to lessen his chances in this fight with his fearless attitude and will likely walk into a big right hand or left hook early on that will send him down for the count.

Vitali probably won’t even be cautious against Chisora because the British heavyweight lacks the hand speed, height and power to really do much in this fight. Vitali has faced much better heavyweights in the past and this is going to be quite a step down for him to be taking. It almost appears that Vitali selected Chisora more for his ability to market a fight with his talking than for his actual ability in the ring. Indeed, Chisora has lost two out of his last three fights and that kind of gives you an indication of about his talent level or lack thereof.
