Image: Chavez Jr. could outweigh Rubio by 25 pounds on SaturdayBy Dan Ambrose: Saturday night against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO’s) when they meet up in San Antonio, Texas at the Alamodome.

Rubio, who rarely weighs more than 165lbs on the night of his fights, may have to deal with a 190 pound Chavez Jr. in this fight. Rubio is a good puncher but he’s really more of a junior middleweight fighting in the middleweight division, whereas Chavez Jr. is more like a cruiserweight fighting as a middleweight.

In looking at the recent training photos of Chavez Jr. taken a couple of days ago, he looks at least 190, maybe as much as 194. He’ll take off some of that weight slowly and then rapidly take off the rest by dehydrating down to get to the 160 pound limit.

It’s going to look scary at the weigh-in this Friday to see how Chavez Jr. Just imagine someone sucking a huge percentage of their water out of their body during a 24 hour period. I just hope Chavez Jr. doesn’t hurt his body by doing this because it’s not healthy for anyone take off that kind of weight.

Chavez Jr. really needs to consider moving up in weight so he doesn’t have to go through this process. Of course, he might not be able to compete against super middleweights. It’s one thing coming in against a 165 pound fighter like Rubio at middleweight and quite another to take on a super middleweight that’s rehydrated to near 180.

To have the same advantage that he’s been having, Chavez Jr. would have to drain down from near 200 to fight at 168 and then blow up to 200 for his fights. I don’t know he’ll do it but if he can do that kind of thing when he moves up, he might be able to compete.
