Image: Tyson Fury British title vacating watchBy Scott Gilfoid: David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) beat John McDermott (26-8, 17 KO’s) by a 1st round knockout in only 73 seconds tonight to win the British heavyweight title eliminator bout at the Olympia in Liverpool, UK.

Price had McDermott looking like a round basketball, going up and down on the canvas over and again for three knockdowns before the bout was mercifully stopped. It wasn’t even interesting to watch. Price pounding on a near defenseless opponent who had no clue how to block or get out of the way of Price’s right hands.

The important outcome from all of this is that Price is now the mandatory challenger for unbeaten British heavyweight Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s), who likely will be vacating his title rather than taking on the hard hitting Price and risking getting his backside handed to him. Fury still hasn’t vacated the title yet, but I expect him to do just that within days or perhaps weeks.

I would be more than happy to see Fury actually take the Price fight so he can prove who the best fighter is in the UK, but I don’t expect Fury to take that risk, not when Price is knocking everybody out in one or two rounds. Getting beaten like that by Price would be disastrous for Fury’s career. He can’t get beaten like that because besides being painful, it would be humiliating. I see Fury running from that pain and giving up his British heavyweight title in lightning fashion.

So, as of today Fury is still the British heavyweight champion but I expect him drop the strap any day now. I give him a week before he gives up the battle and pulls the belt from around his waist and gives back without a fight. Price said to Sky Sports if Fury gives up his title he will “Look like a bit of a coward.” But I guess it’s better for Fury to swallow his pride rather than to swallow his blood.
