Selkirk vs. Toms on January 20th

By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten big punching middleweight Joe Selkirk (7-0, 4 KO’s) will be fighting later on this month against Ryan Toms (9-1-1, 4 KO’s) in a fight at the Olympia in Liverpool, UK.

This a slight step up fight for the tall 6’1” Selkirk but not much of one because he recently beat an arguably better fighter than Toms in Steve O’Meara by a six round decision in December 2010. Selkirk, 26, has major power in both hands and can knock you out with a single shot.

However, he needs some major work in letting his hands go. Selkirk is way too patient and doesn’t throw enough. He seems to wait around to try and land one big bomb instead of rushing his opponents like Gerald McClellan to take them out quickly.

Selkirk would likely have nothing but knockouts out his record if he had a trainer that put some fire under him to come out quicker and throw more punches. If you look at Selkirk’s fights against Matt Scriven, Ernie Smith, and O’Meara, Selkirk let these guys hang around by throwing so few punches.

He could have easily have knocked all of them out in one or two rounds at the most if he just jumped on them immediately. Selkirk may need a different trainer that can bring out the best in him, someone like Emanuel Steward. If Selkirk keeps fighting at the slow pace that he’s currently fighting in, he’ll have problems beating the better middleweights.

This will be a fairly easy fight for Selkirk even if he takes his time in knocking Toms out. This guy isn’t in Selkirk’s league, but then again none of the opponents he’s fought has been either.
