Alvarez, along with Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao, are the three fighters that potentially could find themselves in the ring with the Money Man Floyd on May 5th. Alvarez was thought to be he #1 candidate yesterday after Robert Guerrero was ruled out as a potential opponent for Mayweather by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

However, Cotto is now very much in play as well, as Floyd Mayweather Sr. revealed to eastsideboxing.com that Mayweather Jr. is saying he’d like to fight Cotto if he can’t get a fight with Pacquiao. Still, the date is perfect for a Mexican like Alvarez, as Mayweather will need a Mexican opponent to ensure that he brings in a lot of Mexican cans on pay per view. Cotto is Puerto Rican, so he wouldn’t be the ideal opponent for that date.

Alvarez reportedly will be fighting on May 5th with or without Mayweather. Leonard Ellberbe, one of Mayweather’s advisors, said that they would be revealing who their next opponent will be this week. There is only more day left in this week and there’s still no word about who’s going to be the lucky fighter.

It might take until next week for Mayweather and Ellberbe to reveal who it will be. Pacquiao is the #1 choice but it’s proving to be difficult to put a fight together with him and his promoter Bob Arum due to their requests for different things. Pacquiao wants the fight to take place at the end of May and wants a 50-50 deal.

Mayweather Sr. thinks Alvarez would be a good test for Mayweather. Mayweather Sr. said this about Alvarez: “I think Floyd would pick Alvarez apart. I’m being honest with you. I don’t see him as having a chance…He’s got a puncher’s chance if he’s got anything.”
