Image: Roach knows Pacquiao would outwork Mayweather, but not sure if that would be enough to winBy Chris Williams: Freddie Roach figures that his fighter Manny Pacquiao would throw more punches than Floyd Mayweather Jr. if and when they fight. However, Roach isn’t sure if that would be enough for Pacquiao to win due to Mayweather’s more accurate and cleaner landing shots.

Roach broke down a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao like this in an interview at the New York Times, saying “If one guy averages 85 punches a round and one guy averages 15 punches a round, I think the 85 will beat the 15. The thing is, Mayweather is very precise and very conservative with his punches. But he’s very accurate and he lands good shots. There’s no doubt it’s a tough fight. It’s a challenge and that’s why I like it. I like getting ready for challenges. And Mayweather is the biggest challenge for me and Manny.”

That sounds about right. Pacquiao would likely land more punches because he’s typically the busier fighter no matter who he fights. However, his busy style will create countless opportunities for Mayweather to land his counter shots and make Pacquiao look bad. When Pacquiao is throwing a lot of punches, he’s not able to get a lot of power on his shots. He’s just trying to connect.

That wouldn’t work well against Mayweather, and if Roach is stupid enough to have Pacquiao fight like that then 2012 will be a really bad year for the famous trainer. 2011 was a terrible year for Roach with his fighters Amir Khan and Jorge Linares both losing. Pacquiao should have lost to Juan Manuel Marquez but was given what many boxing fans felt was a gift decision. In light of all these defeats, Roach is look less and less like a genius trainer and more like someone who is just fortunate to have a lot of good fighters join him.
