Image: Rigondeaux wants Donaire nextBy Chris Williams: Newly crowned WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (9-0, 7 KO’s) is targeting former two division world champion Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) in his next bout after destroying previously unbeaten WBA World super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (20-1, 11 KO’s) by a 6th round TKO last Friday night at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rigondeaux dropped Ramos twice in the fight and halted him with a hard left to the body at 1:29 of the 6th. It was a good performance from the 31-year-old Rigondeaux, who may not have many fights under his belt as a pro, but he’s got two Olympic gold medals along with 400 amateur fights going for him.

Rigondeaux is now looking to get a fight against Donaire and is hoping he can get the Filipino star to fight him in 2012. Donaire is facing Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on February 4th or the vacant WBO bantamweight title at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Donaire was asked recently if he’d like to fight Rigondeaux and he wasn’t too thrilled with the idea, preferring to fight Jorge Arce, the WBO bantamweight champion, and then WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka after that.

If Donaire wins both of those fights, he’s talking about wanting to move up in weight to the featherweight division to go after guys like Juan Manuel Lopez and Orlando Salido.

Rigondeaux, a southpaw counter puncher, may be too difficult for Donaire to fight. Rigondeaux does really well against offensive fighters, especially ones like Donaire who load up with everything they throw. Donaire tries to knock everyone out with single shots and that’s not a style that would work well against Rigondeaux.

He loves to fight Donaire types, as he counters them with huge body and head shots when they load up. Donaire looked bad against Omar Narvaez in his last fight. Narvaez is a technical that took away Donaire’s best weapon, his left hook and had him throwing only punch at a time. If you take Donaire and put him in with an even better technical fighter in Rigondeaux, then I can see Donaire getting knocked out or badly outpointed.

Both fighters are promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank. Knowing him, he’ll likely wait too long to match them up by letting the fight marinate too long rather than putting them in against each other while they’re both fighting well. Arum can’t wait too long to match Rigondeaux because he’s 31 and he’ll likely start to lose his skills in the not too distant future.
