Image: Rigondeaux vs. Ramos winner likely won't get Donaire fightBy Chris WIlliams: Later on this month WBA World super bantamweight interim champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 Ko’s) faces unbeaten WBA super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KO’s) in an exciting fight televised by Showtime at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rigondeaux, a two time Olympic gold medalist and expert counter puncher, badly wants to fight the winner of the February 4th match between Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Nonito Donaire for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title. It’s that that Donaire will be the one to come out on top in that fight, and Rigondeaux, and his management, want to fight Donaire in a unification bout later in 2012.

However, the chances of that happening are pretty much nonexistent. Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum hasn’t been talking about wanting to put Donaire in with the tricky Rigondeaux. Instead, the chatter is that Donaire could be aimed at Jorge Arce or WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka. Some boxing fans think that that Arum is afraid to risk Donaire against the dangerous Rigondeaux because the Cuban is a southpaw and excellent counter puncher.

He could be all wrong for Donaire because of those two factors. It’s bad enough that Rigondeaux is an outstanding counter puncher, but when you add in his excellent power, good body punching and his southpaw style of fighting, that’s just too many advantages that he has going for him. As such, Arum will likely keep his prize Donaire far, far away from Rigondeaux for the remainder of Donaire’s career.

The Cuban is bad news for a guy like Donaire, who was just exposed by little Omar Narvaez to a certain extent. Arum is a good matchmaker for his fighters and never puts them in fights where he’s no certain that they can win. Rigondeaux brings too much uncertainty and Arum will likely steer a wide path away from putting Donaire with this guy. I don’t blame Arum. I think Rigondeuax would beat Donaire, so it’s a smart thing to do to avoid him.
