Image: Price-McDermott tomorrow in British heavyweight title eliminatorBy Scott Gilfoid: Tomorrow night two really big heavyweights are going to be going at it in the Olympia in Liverpool, UK with 6’8” David Price (11-0, 9 KO’s) facing the toughest test of his career against “Big Bad” John McDermott (26-7, 17 KO’s) in an important British heavyweight title eliminator bout.

The winner of the fight could possibly be facing British heavyweight champion Tyson Fury if he doesn’t relinquish the title beforehand. McDermott, 31, really wants this fight badly but he’s going to be giving away an absurd five inches in height and roughly the same amount in reach.

That doesn’t mean that he won’t be able to lay a glove on Price, because we’ve already see that Price doesn’t have the greatest of jabs and can’t keep anyone on the outside with that punch. Price also doesn’t move very well.

He’s kind of like a slow, tall stork that leans forward to throw big left hooks and right hands but who isn’t particularly athletic or fast on his feet like the Klitschko brothers. Price does have excellent power but he moves like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. In other words, McDermott can get to him to land some of his shots if he goes at him hard and is willing to take a few heavy shots to get that chance.

Price is a 1st round knockout victim waiting to happen, but it’ll take a fearless and very aggressive McDermott to do it. We saw it done in the Olympics by Roberto Cammarelle in a 2nd round TKO win over Price, and I have no doubt that fighter would do the same thing to Price in the pros.

McDermott can do the same if he comes out fast and loads up with everything on his right hand. Price got stunned by Cammarelle in the 1st round and he never looked the same after that.
