Mikey Garcia could face Lopez-Salido II winner

By Chris Williams: On March 10th, Juan Manuel Lopez and WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido will meet up in a long awaited rematch in Puerto Rico with the winner of that fight possibly facing #3 World Boxing Organization ranked contender Miguel “Mikey” Garcia (27-0, 23 KO’s) in their next fight.

That’s what their promoter Bob Arum wants to happen. It would be one of those in house fights that Arum likes to put together, but in this case it’s actually a very good fight and likely better than the Lopez-Salido rematch.

Arum told RingTV “Mikey Garcia is going to be on that card [Salido vs. Lopez II]. The idea is if he wins, then he will fight the winner between Lopez and Salido.”

As of now, Garcia’s name still isn’t officially listed on the Salido vs. Lopez card but it’s likely to be there very soon, because Arum needs to beef up the card if he wants it to make good money on pay per view. Garcia, 24, needs a good opponent that can stay on their feet for more than just a couple of rounds. Arum has been matching Garcia far too lightly and he’s not getting much out of it with the soft matchmaking each time.

For example, Garcia’s last opponent Juan Carlos Martinez had a record of 19-12. Come on, Arum, you can do better than this. Garcia has been a pro for five years and yet Arum is still throwing in stiffs for him to knock over. What Garcia needs if he’s to impress people on the Salido-Lopez undercard is someone like Orlando Cruz, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Juan Carlos Burgos, Elio Rojas or Hozumi Hasegawa. Anyone short of that is just more soft matchmaking by Arum. With this kind of matchmaking, Garcia will be in shock if he gets thrown in with the winner of the Lopez-Salido fight. He won’t know what to do when they don’t collapse on the canvas like the 2nd tier opposition that Arum has been steadily feeding him.
