Image: McCloskey vs. Katsidis a possibility for MarchBy William Mackay: A fight between Michael Katsidis and Paul McCloskey is being talked about as potential fight for March. McCloskey (23-1, 12 KO’s) recently defeated Breidis Prescott by a 12 round unanimous decision last September in a WBA light welterweight title eliminator bout in Belfast, Ireland.

Despite winning the title fight against WBA champion Marcos Maidana has been slow in coming and McCloskey is wasting valuable time in his career sitting idle. A fight against lightweight Katsidis, 31, would be the perfect bout for each of the fighters.

McCloskey needs to stay sharp and Katsidis really could use a win right now after losing to interim WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns by a 12 round unanimous decision last November. Katsidis has lost three out of his last four fights against good opposition.

The danger of facing McCloskey, 5’8 1/2” is that he’s a bigger fighter than the 5’7” Katsidis is and is used to facing bigger guys than the Australian. Another problem is that Katsidis is might have a problem winning a decision in Belfast.

Many people felt that McCloskey should have lost his last fight to Prescott, and that’s something that might make Katsidis hesitant to fight him. Since it’s doubtful that McCloskey would be interested in fighting in Australia, I have my doubts about this fight taking place. If it does, Katsidis might need a knockout to win.

Froch could fight in Nottingham in April against an opponent still to be determined

Former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch could end up facing someone else in his next fight instead of IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. Eddie Hearn, Froch’s promoter, is weighing the offer made by Bute’s promoter for an April 14th fight in Montreal, Canada. Hearn wants a second fight in Nottingham, as long as the first fight doesn’t end by a knockout or a lopsided decision.

Hearn and Froch want the Bute fight if the money is good and the fight in Nottingham is included. However, Hearn is also looking at having Froch fight in Nottingham in April if the Bute deal doesn’t happen. No opponent is being discussed yet but the idea would be for Froch to fight in front of his fans and then look to face Mikkel Kessler vs. Robert Stieglitz winner in the next fight in 2012.
