Matthysse, #5 WBC, #6 WBO, #11 IBF, must win his next fight on February 10th against Silverio Ortiz to move forward to the possible Sotto fight. For his part, Soto, #2 WBC, #3 WBA, hasn’t lost a fight since 2008 when he was beaten by Francisco Lorenzo by a 4th round disqualification.

Soto has reeled off 14 straight wins during that time. Soto picked up the WBC super featherweight title in 2008 and then later moved up in weight and captured the World Boxing Council lightweight title in March 2010. He defended that title four times and has now moved up in weight to the light welterweight division to go after another title in his third weight class.

Although Soto technically moved up in weight in September 2011, he’s yet to fight a legitimate light welterweight, instead taking on and beating two lightweights Jose Alfaro and Adailton De Jesus. If Soto ends up facing Matthysse in April, that will be a pretty big jump up in class in terms of being put in with a strong light welterweight who can really punch in this weight class.

Mattysse, 29, was supposed to have fought for the vacant WBC light welterweight title last September against Erik Morales but he came down with the flu a couple weeks before the fight and this caused him to pull out of the fight.

Matthysse was beaten by Zab Judah and Devon Alexander by controversial decisions in traveling to those two fighter’s hometowns in 2010 and 2011. It wasn’t the smartest thing for Matthysse to do, but he likely couldn’t resist the payday he received for taking both of the fights.
