Image: Lopez-Salido: Juanma will have to box Salido this time if he wants to winBy Dan Ambrose: If Juan Manuel Lopez (31-1, 28 KO’s) is smart he won’t even attempt to slug with WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (37-11-2, 25 KO’s) in their rematch on March 10th because Lopez doesn’t have the tools to beat Salido and will only get knocked out again like last time the two fighters went at it in April of last year.

What boxing fans discovered in that fight was that Lopez couldn’t hurt Salido with his best shots, whereas Salido was able to hurt him all night long with right hands. Lopez, 28, didn’t even try to box and just kept slinging power shots all night as if he figured that sooner or later Salido would collapse like so many of Lopez’s previous overmatched opponents had done.

But the difference here is that Salido could actually fight and take a shot and that meant that Lopez was going to have to figure out another option if he wanted to win. He didn’t and continued to stupidly try to punch it out with Salido, even after Lopez was hit with two jarring right hands in the 6th.

In the 7th, Lopez tried to fight even harder and ate even more right hands. The fight ended in the 8th with Salido swatting Lopez with right hands in the corner and the referee decided that Lopez had enough and stopped the fight.

Lopez has fought once since the Salido loss, beating Mike Oliver by a 2nd round TKO last October. Lopez was pretty much the same fighter that Salido beat, although he looked slightly fat. He didn’t even try to box Oliver to try some new things that he might need later.
