Klitschko-Mormeck = An even worse mismatch than Vitali vs. Chisora

Image: Klitschko-Mormeck = An even worse mismatch than Vitali vs. ChisoraBy Scott Gilfoid: The Klitschko brothers are getting mismatch happy with their choice of short, slow and badly outclassed opposition in February and March of this year. I realize the heavyweight division is barren of talent but this is getting ridiculous. IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Kltischko (56-3, 49 KO’s) has about the easiest opponent you can find in 39-year-old 5’9″ Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s), who Wladimir will be toying with on March 3rd at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The arena fits 54,000 fans and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s jam filled to the brim with joyous German fans just happy to see this mismatch. For his part, Wladimir’s older brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 Ko’s) has a slightly tougher fight in Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) on February 18th in Munich, Germany.

That’s only slightly a tougher fight than Wladimir’s mismatch against Mormeck. Both fights involve the towering Klitschko brothers facing really short fighters that don’t belong in the same ring with them. It’s fair to say that Mormeck is lucky to have any wins at heavyweight on his resume because his last three fights, which account for all of his experience at the heavyweight level, have all been controversial decisions against mediocre heavyweights. Mormeck beat the following three heavyweights: Timur Ibragimov, Fres Oquendo and Vinny Maddalone. I saw him losing to all three of those guys. Wladimir had to have seen it too, yet he still decided to fight the guy. So sad.

I think Mormeck has better power and skills compared to Chisora, but that’s not saying a whole lot. What Chisora is good at is getting in close and making things messy with short punches. Sometimes he can hold and hit if you let stay in close. Mormeck isn’t like that. He just someone that moves around a lot and tries to land fast combinations when he comes forward for brief attacks. He didn’t used to fight that way when he held the WBA/WBC cruiserweight titles in the past. Back then, Mormeck would get inside on his opponents and work like Joe Frazier using a lot hooks and head movement.

Mormeck did well at cruiserweight until David Haye chopped him down in 2007. Mormeck moved up in weight and has been a different fighter since making that move. Now Mormeck moves around, hits and runs and tries not to get as much as possible. It’s like he’s learned from training with heavyweights that it’s not smart to let them hit you. He’s not going to be able to move enough to keep Wladimir from hitting him and I see this fight ending fairly early with Mormeck getting stopped.
