Khan gives Peterson an ultimatum: You’ve got a few days to sign the rematch contract or I’m moving on

Image: Khan gives Peterson an ultimatum: You've got a few days to sign the rematch contract or I'm moving onBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan is tired of being ignored by IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson in his attempts at getting a rematch with the Washington, DC based fighter.

Khan and his promoters from Golden Boy recently offered Peterson a tempting 50-50 purse split for a rematch but that’s failed to interest Team Peterson, who is looking for better offers than that. Khan, now obviously frustrated, is giving Peterson an ultimatum for him to agree to a rematch in the next few days or he moves on.

Here’s what Khan said on his twitter page today: “We waiting on Peterson. [He’s] Running scared [and] won’t sign the dolled line. Another few days; if he doesn’t sign, we move on and he’ll be stripped from [by] WBA. Keep the IBF; I don’t want it even if they gave it to me.”

This is too funny. Where does Khan think he’s going? If he doesn’t get the rematch with Peterson, then he’s going to be seen as a fake by a lot of boxing fans. Khan absolutely needs the Peterson rematch to prove that he wasn’t the scared-looking, running, fouling fighter that many of us saw of him in that fight. Move on?

Just where can he go? He’s supposed to move up in weight to the welterweight division, but who can he fight? Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t going to fight Khan off of that fight. Khan will need to prove himself at this weight, but can he actually beat anyone good? I don’ think so, not the Khan I saw against Peterson.

You put Khan in with stronger, sturdy welterweights like Mike Jones, Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz, and they’ll dent his chin in one round and send him to the canvas quick. Those guys are much bigger punchers than Peterson, and let’s face it: Khan would have been knocked out by Peterson if he had the kind of power that guys like Berto, Ortiz and Jones possess.

As it was, Khan was badly stressed out from the power that Peterson had. Can you imagine what Khan would be for if he fought the likes of Berto, Ortiz or Jones? He’d be knocked out and fast. I don’t think for a second that Golden Boy Promotions would even let Khan get near those guys when he steps up.

Believe me, they’ll put Khan in with an old toothless lion like 40-year-old Shane Mosley and keep their fingers crossed that Mosley doesn’t knock Khan out in the first two rounds. That’s about all Mosley is good for now in my view is about one to three good rounds where he’s dangerous because of his still existing power. But once Khan gets past the third, he’d beat him.
