Khan can’t succeed Pacquiao and Mayweather if he can’t prove he’s better than Peterson

Image: Khan can't succeed Pacquiao and Mayweather if he can't prove he's better than PetersonBy William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions see Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) as a fighter that will one day in the near future succeed both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as boxing’s #1 pound-for-pound star.

That was the belief that GBP CEO Richard Schaefer and GBP president Oscar De La Hoya had for the 25-year-old Khan. However, those dreams, which you could now say are more like pipe dreams, have come apart at the seams with Khan’s clear cut 12 round decision loss to Lamont Peterson last December 10th.

Khan didn’t look like a future pound-for-pound #1 in in boxing; Khan didn’t even look worthy of the IBF and WBA title belts he had in his possession at the time. No, Khan looked like frightened, amateur, running around the ring, fouling like crazy, and stealing glances at the referee every once in a while to monitor whether he would call Khan for his fouling.

It was just an awful performance and it was like watching some young kid that was supposed to be the next big thing in math flunk a simple arithmetic test. Khan was just plain horrible. The excuses that he and Golden Boy made after the fight made him look even worse, like someone incapable of acknowledging his faults.

Khan wants to move on to the bigger fights against guys like Mayweather Jr., but he can’t now. Khan has no other choice but to try and get the rematch with Peterson to prove that he can pass the test. Khan can’t move past this because he flunked the test big time. If he were to try and move forward to get a fight with Mayweather Jr. right now, Mayweather avoid him like he was a smelly skunk because of the taint from Khan’s performance against Peterson.

Khan perhaps knows this which is why Peterson was recently offered a 50-50 deal for a rematch. I think it’s going to take a lot more than that to get Peterson back in the ring. Try 55-45 for Peterson and Washington, DC as the venue. That’s for starters. They could ask for even more and Khan will have to accept it if he wants to move past this fight to try and get his mega fight with Mayweather.
