Image: Kell Brook's March 17th opponent to be revealed on WednesdayBy Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook (26-0, 18 KO’s) and the boxing world will learn who he’ll be fighting in his next bout on March 17th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire.

The choice of an opponents is supposed to be someone really good that not only can test the 25-year-old Brook but possibly even beat him.

I for one don’t buy it for a second. Brook has a set pattern of facing 2nd and 3rd tier opposition his entire career and I don’t expect that to change for this fight.

The only name that’s been mentioned is Matthew Hatton (42-5-2, 16 KO’s), a limited welterweight with an inflated ranking of #8 by the WBA. Hatton’s claim to fame is that he took on unbeaten 20-year-old Saul Alvarez last year and soaked up 12 long rounds of completely one-sided punishment en route to losing a lopsided 12 round decision in a fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title.

What immediately dumps out at you is the question of why Hatton, a light hitting fringe level welterweight, was picked to fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title against Alvarez? I wonder if Hatton’s last name had anything to do with it?

Anyway, Hatton will likely get the call for Brook and that would be about the equivalent of Brook facing a 2nd tier welterweight and it would be in keeping with the kinds of guys that Brook has always fought. I mean I known someday Brook will fight someone good, but I don’t expect that to be a consistent thing. He’ll fight for a title, likely for the vacant IBF belt against Mike Jones, and probably lose badly.

After that, it’ll most likely be back to the B and Cs for Brook as he reloads for another title crack. What I’m saying is that there is a complete lack of risk taking fights for the guy since day one, and I see tomorrow’s news announcement about his next opponent being nothing special. If it was me, I wouldn’t make a big deal out of this like they’re doing. I would mention it by rumor and leave at that.

Ticket sales are supposedly going well for Brook’s March 17th fight. I wonder why? Do people actually want to see Brook fight Hatton or do they know something I don’t know about him fighting a good opponent?
